Overcoming Plateaus

February 01, 2010Posted by Leslie Kendall

Everyone will reach a point where they find they are not getting anywhere. Where no matter how much they try they don’t seem to get any stronger or fitter.

When this happens there are a few things you can do to overcome the plateau.

Incrementaly Increase the weight or intensity

Every two weeks put the weight up or increase the resistance by a small amount and before too long you will have surpassed the plateau.

Get a training partner or personal trainer

Sometimes all it takes to get passed a plateau is just a little more motivation. Someone to push you that extra bit.

Switch up the exercises

Variety is important to keeping your muscles working. By doing the same exercises over n over again the body becomes conditioned to the movements. Sometimes just changing exercises will shock the body out of its plateau.

Supersets

Get the most out of your workout by combining multiple exercises to perform without rest. Try close grip pushups straight after bench press or seated rows straight after lat pull downs.

If all else fails, try having a break

Try not working out for a week. Give your body a rest and when you come back fresh you may find you break through your plateau easily.
